Students participate in 2.5 – 3 hours per week of in depth Jewish learning.  Each session is typically divided into an hour of study led by a MEOR rabbi and a second hour featuring inspiring guest speakers from a wide range of fields. These classes are not eligible for academic credit and represent a very significant commitment by students.

Weekly Shabbat dinners and special Shabbaton experiences introduce students to the beauty and warmth of Shabbat.  Whether in the home of a MEOR rabbi, at a MEOR center near campus or in the homes of generous MEOR supporters,  students are welcomed by families who are living Jewish lives and observing the enduring traditions of the Jewish people.

Students keep an ongoing journal of their reflections, responses, questions and concerns.  As they delve deeply into Jewish texts, reconcile modernity and tradition, and encounter the major issues of life, the experience of expressing their thoughts through journals allows students to voice their impressions in a non-judgemental environment.

The Maimonides Leaders Fellowship program also includes opportunities for students to participate in MEOR’s innovative learning-oriented trips to Israel.  These two-to-three week trips combine daily classes with outstanding Israel-based teachers, inspiring guest speakers and opportunities to encounter and enjoy the land of Israel.

Maimonides FAQ

[/spb_text_block] [spb_accordion width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last”] [spb_accordion_tab title=”Q. Is a Jewish education required for acceptance?” icon=””] [spb_text_block animation=”none” animation_delay=”0″ padding_vertical=”0″ padding_horizontal=”0″ width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last”] A. No. There are no requirements regarding the level of Jewish education. In fact, the Fellowship is geared towards students with the most limited Jewish backgrounds. Our commitment is to service the “lowest common denominator” . However, because we explore each topic both on a basic and more sophisticated level, students with more extensive background can gain a tremendous amount. However, due to funding limitations and a desire to maintain a comfortable atmosphere for those with minimal background, we cannot accept students whose background would overqualify them – such as those who attended an observant full-time Jewish high school. [/spb_text_block] [/spb_accordion_tab] [spb_accordion_tab title=”Q. What is the goal of the program and in what way is it a Leadership Fellowship?” icon=””] [spb_text_block animation=”none” animation_delay=”0″ padding_vertical=”0″ padding_horizontal=”0″ width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last”] A. The MEOR Maimonides Leaders Fellowship aims to empower modern-day Jewish college students with the information and inspiration necessary to become passionate Jewish leaders of the next generation. Our belief at MEOR is that ignorance of Jewish texts and traditions is the greatest impediment against young Jews making Judaism an integral feature of their lives and taking an active role in their communities. Through educational lectures, guest speakers, and experiential field trips (Shabbat programs, cultural and religious events, etc.), Maimonides offers qualified students the opportunity to immerse themselves in a traditional Jewish environment, where they can grapple maturely with great life questions and explore how ancient Jewish wisdom can connect with modern Jewish leaders. [/spb_text_block] [/spb_accordion_tab] [spb_accordion_tab title=”Q. Why do I get paid and who is paying me?” icon=””] [spb_text_block animation=”none” animation_delay=”0″ padding_vertical=”0″ padding_horizontal=”0″ width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last”] A. The payment is for your commitment and time.  College is a busy place and your time is precious and we recognize that.  The people who donate care deeply for the Jewish people and want to see the next generation properly educated and willing to use their talent and energies to help strengthen Jewish communities wherever they choose to settle. [/spb_text_block] [/spb_accordion_tab] [spb_accordion_tab title=”Q. What are the requirements for receiving the stipend?” icon=””] [spb_text_block animation=”none” animation_delay=”0″ padding_vertical=”0″ padding_horizontal=”0″ width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last”] A. The Maimonides stipend is pro-rated based on attendance and participation in Fellowship activities, including seminars, off-campus trips and journals.
